When you are based in Texas, you need to be aware that if you operate a vehicle designed or used to transport cargo that has a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating of greater than 26,000 pounds you are required to register in Texas as a motor carrier and be issued a Texas Certificate Number in addition to your USDOT number. Texas is a bit unique with this requirement and it is important that you obtain it. When the certificate number is assigned, the TxDMV will issue a motor carrier registration vehicle listing (insurance cab card) to you. A copy of the insurance cab card listing that identifies the vehicle being operated shall be maintained in the cab of the carrier's vehicles at all times.
